BAZEX

BAZEX device is used for more biocompatibility of hemodialysis process due to reductive-oxidative potential and pH correction of dialysis solutions.

BAZEX is an unique system, which has no analogues in the world. It is used for changing redox potential of water for hemodialysis. An achievement of reductive-oxidative balance between dialyzing solution and internal environment provides a patient with arteriotony normalization, removes dermatological reactions, is felt like a “soft dialyzing solution”, speeds up a hemodialysis at simultaneous increasing elimination degree of hazardous substances from blood, provides with conditions for fast normalization and functional recovery of kidneys.

Physical-chemical characteristics of blood came through dialyzer of artificial kidney depend a lot on characteristics of dialyzing solution, in particular on pH and component composition. All the dialyzing and infusion solutions have redox potential in the field of positive values about + 200 ÷ + 350 mV at measuring of oxidation-reduction potential by platinum electrode relatively to silver-chlorine reference electrode (SCE). Most of biological liquids including blood have redox potential in the field of negative values about (-100 ÷ -180) mV, SCE. So values difference between redox potenrial of dialyzing solution and blood leads to disbalance of peroxide homeostasis system in organism. The blood treated in dialyzer has after it the redox potential higher than usual one, that makes conditions for high activity of peroxide radicals with injurious effect to living cells. In blood a tendency to acidosis appears, pH goes down and buffer reserve is depleted. BAZEX device is done for correction and stabilizing of redox potential and parameters of acid-base equilibrium of the blood (including pH) as electrochemical device, that works in addition to artificial kidney device. BAZEX device is produced on a basis of flow-through diaphragm electrochemical MB-11 modules. Dialyzing solution prepared with BAZEX has pH and redox values close to similar blood parameters, that provides balancing of the blood and dialyzing solution on parameters of peroxide homeostasis and acid-base equilibrium.

Preliminary test showed, that BAZEX device application gives to the hemodialysing patients positive clinical effects. This device has no analogues and it is priority of Russian science. It is in sight to set BAZEX device of more productivity and dimension-type into water treatment systems of any medical purposes. Dialyzing and infusion solution with reductive (below zero) redox values have perspectives of application for organism protection against ionizing radiation, toxic oxidants, high doses of antimetabolites and radiomimetics in oncological clinic.

Above moments prove advisability of modernization and its application to clinical practice of electrochemical BAZEX device. The license of Ministry of Health for BAZEX device application was received in 1994. Realization to put the device into practice had being delayed because of financial and organizational reasons. Today because of improvement of FEM modules and development of MB modules and technical electrochemical devices done at its basis it is possible to produce some other electrochemical systems for pH and redox potential correction of medicinal solutions, in particular, transmembrane effect on the blood by anode activated solutions with the purpose of extracorporal detoxication and blood decontamination.
